The European Commission has adopted a proposal for a Directive on Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) and a proposal for a Directive on the restriction of the use of certain hazardous substances in electrical and electronic equipment.

Increased recycling of electrical and electronic equipment, in accordance with the WEEE Directive, will limit the total quantity of waste going to final disposal. Producers will be responsible for taking back and recycling electrical and electronic equipment. Consumers will be
able to return their equipment free of charge.

The European Commission's proposals for EC Directives follow a number of years of work to identify ways of reducing the impact of waste electrical and electronic equipment on the environment.

There were a number of reasons for focusing on this waste stream:
This is a growing and dynamic sector, and the quantity of waste electrical and electronic equipment is expected to increase significantly in the future.
There is the potential to increase reuse, recovery and recycling rates.
Some electrical and electronic equipment contains hazardous materials.

What does this mean for you?
As a manufacturer, retailer or supplier of IT Equipment, peripherals or consumer electronics you will be responsible for offering a recycling or refurbishment option for your customer.
